Make the Sahara fertile

Posted by: Christer Berg

Campaign: How do we eliminate or reduce existing emissions?

Through large scale irrigation, the Sahara desert could be made fertile. Plants will not only consume CO2; they will also change the climate in the region. And they may also produce various food, such as fruits. A wild but not impossible project.

Can you hydro seed a dessert? what would that take on the current water supply?

Magnus Penker

Absolutely possible, just need some imaginations!

Initially large scale irrigation plants are needed, of the new more cost effective generation developed in Israel. Over time, however, plants roots will find groundwater deep down and pull the level up. Gradually the plants will then emit more and more vapor, thereby initiating a new climate system over Sahara. This has been tested in small scale.
