Energy-efficient home design (A/C and heating)

Posted by: Zachary Purcell

Campaign: Which are the fastest, easiest to implement climate-friendly energy technologies?

In North America, approximately 50% of electricity usage is used by heating and air conditioning systems. Increasing their efficiency and improving insulation will reduce energy usage. Further to this, there are examples from nature of passive air conditioning. The magnetic termite (Amitermes meridionalis) of Australia builds their mounds in a north-south orientation and uses air pressure differentials to intake cooler air from near the ground and expels hot, stale air from a central chimney.

Interesting idea -- are there other lessons from nature that we might replicate?
